Graduate Contribution – Learning Journeys by Matthew Tye

“And if we want to achieve our goals, then let us empower ourselves with the weapon of knowledge and let us shield ourselves with unity and togetherness”. A powerful message from an inspiring 16 year-old Malala Yousafzai who delivered a speech at the UN in New York earlier this month. If you have not yet had the chance to listen to it, I would encourage you to do so. Because we now have a remarkable young world leader living and studying in Birmingham from whom we all can take inspiration on our own journeys.

Last September I found myself embarking upon a new passage, a BLF journey through the Get on Board Programme. And it is very much a journey that’s a continuous path rather than a springboard or stepping stone. The programme opened the world and knowledge of corporate governance, equipping us with the detail and skills to become effective board members. Not wanting to waste any time and to get ‘get on board’ straight away, I put in a trustee application to the International Glaucoma Association of which I am a member. This is a patient-based organisation which works to raise awareness of glaucoma, promote research related to early diagnosis and treatment, and provide support to patients and those who care for them. Glaucoma is one of the most common eye disorders. Thousands of those affected in Birmingham and across the country have been helped by the charity since its establishment in 1974. At the time of the AGM there were six vacancies on the board to be filled from seven applicants. Although I was not one of those elected, the Council had earlier ratified to co-opt the person who was not elected onto the Board because of the skills and experience shown by all of the candidates. My three year term of office began in March and I have already attended a board meeting and spent a day in the offices engaging with staff and exploring some small but effective ways we can drive the organisation forward. One of my priorities as a trustee is to see patients manage and record their lifelong glaucoma journeys better especially through the use of digital media. Over recent months a ‘Glaucoma Passport’ emerged to support patients on their journeys. I now want to see this taken to the next level as a more accessible tool in the form of an app.

Good governance is knowing where to hover – not too high and not too low. I’m excited that my BLF journey is already ‘on the map’ and can’t wait to see what’s in store over the coming months and years.

Graduate Profile – Mashkura Begum

Mashkura Begum

If you would like to meet Mashkura or have an informal chat about her suitability as a mentee please call us on 0845 505 1875.

“I have actively contributed within my local community by volunteering in and attending youth advancement programs”

Mashkura began her career in 1999 working in Lozells as a Community Development Worker for a youth organisation where she established a number of initiatives that are still successfully being run. She later worked for Black Country Connexions and then for Urban Living (Housing Market Regeneration Programme) as the Community Cohesion and Engagement Manager. She managed a budget of £1.2 million and developed innovative community cohesion programmes working with varied community and voluntary groups.

Since 2011 she has been working for Birmingham Leadership Foundation (BLF), a newly formed not-for-profit organisation. As the Chief Executive, she has commissioned 14 projects and organised a very high profile launch for the organisation at the Council House.

Mashkura volunteers as a trustee for The Bangladeshi Youth Forum (BYF), a grass roots organisation that engages young people, particularly those that are termed ‘as hard to reach’ in areas of personal development, employment and training. She is also a trustee for an organisation called Community Resources Information Services (CRIS) which is based in Northfield but operates citywide. CRIS is nationally recognised as an organisation that successfully works with newly arrived communities. Mashkura has, in the past, been a mentor for Birmingham Mentoring Consortium which has now evolved into an organisation called Pioneers.

“Quote Here.”

Miles is a Senior Lecturer in Strategic Management, with research interests in supply strategy and performance management; simulation conceptual modelling and greening the supply chain. He has both a doctorate and first class honours degree from Aston Business School in Birmingham. His interests were shaped from practical experience within the supply departments of GM-Fiat Worldwide Purchasing and Jaguar Cars. Miles has a number of community interests, firstly he was a board member for Brook in Birmingham and now he currently sits on the board of the Birmingham Leadership Foundation. As a teacher, Miles received a Vice Chancellor distinguished teaching award upon the recommendation of DMU students in 2009. His efforts in representation were recognised with ‘Full Guild Colours’ while at Aston serving on the University Council and Senate (re-elected to serve two successive terms). In 2011, Miles made a Channel 4thought discussing his views and experience during the August 2011 riots in Birmingham. He displayed his leadership skills by forming the ‘riot clean up group’ during these disturbances working in partnership and supporting other stakeholders within the city. These efforts were noted by readers of the Birmingham Mail, who awarded the clean up group with a ‘local heroes award’ and the West Midland’s Police recognised Miles as an ‘Outstanding Citizen’ in 2011. Empowering and providing opportunity for young people is at the heart of everything Miles does.
